Today I used a soft focus added in with Photoshop. Any feed back on this? Do you think it looks better with it or without it?

http://www.aibento.net/2009/03/onigiri-bento-box-333/

Basically the background area and the onigiri are blurred, while the lunch in front is in focus. I just started this today so I'm curious as to what people think.

Time is an illusion, lunchtime, doubly so.

It's quite pretty, and looks rather professional to me.  Of course, my artistic knowledge is limited to, "I know what I like when I see it," so you can't judge by me.

I like it and like Loolee said it is very pretty and professional looking. I think if anything besides onigiri (or something else well known and viewed a lot) had been in the background it would drive me crazy just because I like to see all the detail I can when looking at pictures of bentos.  Wink

Hmm, I'm going to say I don't like it... I hate sounding mean, though! Your photos are always nice but I think soft focus doesn't work for bento pics. They need to be fresh, bright and vital - like yours always are. I don't know what it's like in other parts of the world, but here in the UK I think a lot of people see soft focus food pics as a bit old fashioned. I prefer yours without! They are lovely as is.

Interesting point of view, it's good to hear something like that. I'll have to take that into consideration for the book.

Ooo, are you writing a book? (Sorry if this is something written somewhere else - I'm still catching up!)

It's funny cause I don't even really have skills in photography lol. I just have a lightbox and try different angles. Smiley

You definitely pick up more than you realise from taking bento photos. Food stylist, photography, chef!  Cheesy

I do like the soft focus, especially in that shot. I think it depends on the bento, though, whether the focus should be softened or not to highlight the actual food.
