About Me

Pikko & Baby Girl

I am a 31 year old mom of two living in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2007, I lost 22 pounds on Weight Watchers while doing this bento blog. It took me 3 years to pack that weight back on and now in 2011, I’m back on Weight Watchers to lose it all again.

In 2010, Quirk Books published my cookbook, Yum-Yum Bento Box: Fresh Recipes for Adorable Lunches, which I co-authored with Makiko Ogawa of Japan. You can visit the book’s site here.

I was born and raised in the small town of Hilo, Hawaii. My other interests include online gaming, scrapbooking, bon dances, University of Hawaii football, UFC, and movies. I work as Program Administrator at the University of Hawaii for the Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences department and as a Senior Content Manager for the ZAM Network on the Allakhazam.com Final Fantasy XI and the Final Fantasy XIV websites.

My other blogs: Learn 2 Cook, Bento Central, Review Addicts, and You Know You’re From Hilo If…

I can be reached at pikko@aibento.net.

Question & Answer

How long as Adventures in Bentomaking been around?

I began this blog on MySpace in April 2007. I moved to Blogger and then to adventuresinbentomaking.com and finally to aibento.net.

Why did you start doing this?

I began bentoing after doing an online search for some internet friends to show them what a bento was. I found the online bento community and since I was starting Weight Watchers at the time, I decided to use bentos to regulate my portions. It worked!

Where did you get the name Adventures in Bentomaking?

One of my favorite movies to watch as a kid was Adventures in Babysitting. Elizabeth Shue was totally my hero and I couldn’t resist naming my blog after that awesome movie!

Why do you call your kids Baby Girl and Buddy?

Mr. Pikko is a very private person and I happen to agree with it in certain areas. For that reason I keep their names off my blog and anytime family members comment using their names, I edit it out and change it to their online names.

Love your site! I am so addicted to Bento right now! I too am from the big Island, Lapahoehoe/Papaoloa but living in thailand now. Your site got me all geared up. I had planned on doing bentos for my little one, but now I am super stoked to be making them for me. I never thought of what a great weight loss tool they would be! Ran off to the local Japanese dollar store here and found all kinds for goodies. Thanks for helping me make my yucky diet lunches fun and exciting!

I super love your site! My hubby & I entered a bento-making contest at our little girl’s school & made your Goldilocks & the 3 bears bento as an inspiration. This site was a big help! Thank you & mabuhay from us here in the Philippines.
